Al-Qaida Confirms: Sa´ad Bin Laden Is Dead

by Florian Flade

Sa´ad Bin Laden could very likely have become his father’s successor. The 30-year old son of Al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden and his first wife Najwa had remained within the circles of the terrorist organization when US bombs fell on Afghanistan in 2001. Along with high-ranking Al-Qaida figures like Saif al-Adl and Sulayman Abu Ghaith as well as other Bin Laden family members, Sa´ad fled to Iran after the US invaded Afghanistan.

According to various sources Sa´ad, born in Jeddah (Saudi-Arabia) in 1979, and the other relatives of Osama Bin Laden were put under house arrest by the Iranian regime. What seemed like a prison-like situation was in fact protection from America´s war on Al-Qaida.

Sometime in 2008 or 2009 Sa´ad Bin Laden was allowed to leave Iran. He made his way to the Afghan-Pakistan border region and re-joined the Al-Qaida structure in Waziristan. In summer 2009 US intelligence sources claimed the Bin Laden son was killed by a CIA drone strike earlier that year. Sa´ad was not the prime target of the assassination but intelligence sources estimated there was a 85% chance he was in fact killed.

For three years Al-Qaida remained silent about the alleged death of Sa´ad Bin Laden. This week the organization officially confirmed it. In a new video released by “As-Sahab Media”, Al-Qaida´s Emir Dr.Ayman az-Zawahiri mentions the Bin Laden sibling when talking about Osama Bin Laden´s life.

The new video is part of a series titled “Days with the Imam”. Its content is basically Zawahiri telling stories about his time with Bin Laden. At one point the Egyptian terrorist leader says: “Osama Bin Laden had a son named Sa´ad Bin Laden – may Allah have mercy upon him”. Zawahiri then goes on telling Sa´ad Bin Laden has received martyrdom in the Jihad against America.

So with two of his sons killed (Khalid Bin Laden died in the US raid at the Abbottabad compound in May 2011 alongside his father) there are at least 11 Bin Laden sons still alive today. Two of which (Ibrahim and Hussain) the late Al-Qaida leader fathered when in hiding.

Bin Laden-Son´s Letter About Father´s Death

by Florian Flade

Letter signed by Omar Bin Laden

For the first time since US Special Forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden nearly one week ago, relatives of the most-wanted terrorist have issued a statement on his death. A blog operated by one a former Jihadi colleague of Osama Bin Ladens, released a document yesterday allegedly written by the sons of the al-Qaida founder. The letter bears the signature of Osama Bin Laden´s fourth son, Omar.

“We have received the news given by US-President Obama that US troops attacked the compound of our father, Osama Bin Laden (…) and killed him instead of arresting him”, reads the single-page letter. The killing of Bin Laden is regarded by the family as the “strongest violation of human feelings”, according to the document. Now, the letter says, President Obama is obliged to fully investigate the fate of Osama Bin Laden and release the DNA analysis.

Dumping Bin Ladens body in the sea is “not acceptable from humanitarian and religious standpoint”, it is described as a “reckless and abusive towards the family”. The feelings of hundreds of millions of Muslims were hurt by this action, the Bin Laden son writes. As children of Osama Bin Laden, his sons now feel the responsibility and right to demand full investigation into the death of their father.

The letter, who´s authenticity cannot be independently verified was signed by Omar Bin Osama Bin Laden. Other sons of the al-Qaida leader, are not named although the document claims to speak in their name. At least five of the ten known sons of Osama Bin Laden have turned their back on their father and his violent campaign of terrorism. They no longer belong to the al-Qaida circle and left Bin Laden years ago. One of the sons, 24 year-old Ali, was sentenced to 18 years in prison by a Saudi court in 2008 for illegal possession of a gun.

The alleged author of the newly released statement, Omar Bin Laden, was born in 1981 in the Saudi coastal town of Jeddah. He is the son of Osama Bin Laden and his Syrian wife Najwa Ghanem. Omar left his father in 2001 and is an outspoken critic of al-Qaida´s terrorism. Due to his renunciation of Jihad, he was able to regain his Saudi citizenship. Meanwhile Omar Bin Laden is married to a British woman in his second marriage and is seeking to obtain a permission to move to a European country or the United States.

In 2009 Omar Bin Laden and his mother wrote a biographical book titled “Growing Up Bin Laden”, in which both describe their lives as relatives of World´s most-wanted man.

Omar´s alleged letter about his father´s death was published on the webiste run by the former Egyptian Jihadi fighter Abu Walid al-Masri. Al-Masri, born in 1945 in Egypt allegedly worked for Mercedes Benz in Kuwait before joining the Arab Mujahidin in Afghanistan in their fight against the Soviets in the 1980s. He worked as a journalist, reporting about the Jihad news from the frontlines. During that time Al-Masri met Osama Bin Laden.

He claimed he was never part of al-Qaida and strongly criticized the organization´s violent agenda. One of Al-Masri´s daughters is allegedly married to Saif al-Adl, who had been living in Iran and is now said to be part of the al-Qaida infrastructure in the Pakistani tribal areas of North-Waziristan, acting as Al-Qaida´s Military Chief.

Abu Walid al-Masri, living under house arrest in Iran for some years, is an active blogger, release comments on Muslim affairs and the war in Afghanistan on a regular basis on his Arabi-language website.

Khalid or Hamza? – Which Bin Laden Son Was Killed in Abbottabad

by Florian Flade

Osama Bin Laden´s Hideout in Abbottabad

Hamza or Khalid – Which Bin Laden son was killed in the Abbottabad raid? Nothing seems clear even though a lot of details have emerged from the US Navy Seal operation inside Osama Bin Laden´s hideout earlier this week. There are contradictory reports on who was inside the compound at the time of the raid and who was killed, injured or survived the US attack.

John O.Brennan, the chief counterterrorism advisor to President Obama, said in a White House press conference on May 2 that the US Special forces had killed Hamza Bin Laden, the 22 year-old son of the Al-Qaida leader.

Question: Were there any civilian – I mean, how many civilian casualties were there?

MR. BRENNAN: Bin Laden died; the two al Qaeda facilitators – the brothers, who were – the courier and his brother in the compound; bin Laden’s son Hamza; and the woman, presumed to be his wife, who was shielding bin Laden.

Since that press conference it became clear, the woman that assaulted the American soldiers in the room with Osama Bin Laden did survive the raid and was not killed but shot in the leg. From documents found inside the Abbottabad compound it is possible to suggest the woman is Bin Laden´s youngest wife, Amal al-Sadah from Yemen.

Today the New York Times reveals some new details of the Abbottabad raid in a inside account. According to the NYT, the Navy Seals Team first shot a bodyguard of Bin Laden who tried to attack them and then also killed a woman.

“When the commandos moved into the main house, they saw the courier’s brother, who they believed was preparing to fire a weapon. They shot and killed him. Then, as they made their way up the stairs of the house, officials said they killed Bin Laden’s son Khalid as he lunged toward the Seal team.”

So, which account is to be trusted as for now? Was the Bin Laden son who was killed and then obviously taken by the US soldiers along with the body of Osama Bin Laden himself, Khalid or Hamza?

I spoke to Chief Editor of the Arab newspaper “Al-Quds al-Arabi”, Abdel Bari Atwan, who met Bin Laden in November 1996 in Afghanistan. Atwan also had the chance to meet some of Bin Laden´s family members in the Tora Bora caves. He believes it is most likely Hamza Bin Laden, the Al-Qaida leader´s favorite son was the one shot dead by the Americans.

Khalid Bin Laden is of the same age as Hamza and seems to have remained inside Al-Qaida after 9/11. Last year he sent a letter to the Iranian government, urging them to lift the house arrest and travel ban for some members of the Bin Laden family held in a compound near Tehran.

Until further details will be released by the U.S. government or some credible inside sources, speculation will not stop on who was present during the killing of the most wanted man alive.
