Syrian Insurgents Announce “Martyrdom Brigade”

by Florian Flade

The footage seems oddly similar to what was released from Iraq in 2003 soon after the American invasion. Masked gunmen posing with their weapons in front of an Al-Qaida flag. But this is not the scene of a Iraqi Al-Qaida video – it is recent footage coming out of Syria.

A group of the so-called “Free Syrian Army” in the occupied city fo Homs has – according to the new video – formed a martyrdom battalion, a special unit committed to carry out suicide bombings in the country.

One Syrian militant explains that the “Al-Baraa Ibn Malik Martyrdom Brigade” will fight the Assad regime and its military with all needs, especially suicide bombers.

The video emerges just days after U.S. officials claim Al-Qaida does and will play a bigger role in the Syrian insurgency. According to U.S. intelligence officials Al-Qaida militants from Iraq have infiltrated the Syrian resistance and are now fighting against the Syrian regime. Some of the opposition groups are not even aware of the Jihadi militants amongst them, the U.S. intelligence analysts are stating.

Al-Qaida in Iraq (officially “Islamic State of Iraq”) is suspected of being the mastermind of recent suicide bombings inside Syria, the U.S. claims.

Other media reports seem to confirm the U.S. analysis of Al-Qaida infiltrating the Syrian insurgency. Weapons from Iraq are allegedly being sold back to Syria by the Iraqi Jihadi groups. The price of these arms has doubled or even tripled in recent weeks. An AK-47 assault rifle is available for the price of 1400 $-US, before it was as low as 400 to 500 US-$.

U.S. Adds Taliban Trainer Qari Hussain to Terror-List

Trainer of Teenage Suicide Bombers – Qari Hussain Mehsud

Qari Hussain Mehsud is probably the most feared and mystical figure of the Pakistani Taliban movement “Tehrik e-Taliban Pakistan” (TTP). He is known as the “teacher of the martyrdom-seekers”, a trainer of child suicide bombers and chief of the suicide bombing operations of the Pakistani Taliban. Numerous attacks by the TTP, including deadly bombings against Pakistani military, government and police compounds as well as against Pakistani religious minorities were orchestrated by Qari Hussain´s terror cells. A US$ 600,000 bounty was placed on his head by the Pakistani government, which considers the Taliban´s chief suicide bomber trainer to be among the Top 3 Terrorists in the country.

Today the US State and Treasury departments followed the Pakistani example and added Qari Hussain (Executive Order 13224) to the list of designated global terrorists. Only two other members of the TTP – the group´s leader Hakimullah Mehsud and his deputy Wali ur-Rahman – had been on that list. Now all known assets of Qari Hussain are frozen and he is banned of using financial institutions and travels.

“Qari Hussain is one of TTP’s top lieutenants and also serves as the trainer and organizer of the group’s suicide bombers. Training camps organized by Hussain are notorious for recruiting and training men of all ages as suicide bombers, and Hussain has gained particular notoriety for his heavy recruitment of children” – today´s press release states.

The US suspects Qari Hussain to be the mastermind of several high-profile operations including the suicide bombing on a CIA base in Khost which killed seven agents – “Furthermore, Hussain is believed to have trained the Jordanian militant Humam Muhammad Abu Mulal al-Balawi – the double-agent whose suicide mission on December 30, 2009, in Khost, Afghanistan, killed seven Americans.”

Faisal Shahzad, the US citizen who tried to detonate a car bomb at New York ´s Times Square in May 2010 is suspected of being one of Qari Hussain´s students, trained and advised by the TTP commander.

Qari Hussain remains a mysterious figure among Pakistan´s Taliban because of the lack of pictures and video footage that actually shows the face of the terrorist. Only recently there has been a short video appearance in which Hussain is seen without a blurred out face.

The notorious suicide bomber trainer was born into the Mehsud tribe of South Waziristan and is said to have family connection to the former Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud. In the South Waziristan region Qari Hussain ran a number of schools for teenage suicide bombers prior to the Pakistani military´s intervention and occupation of South Waziristan. After the army offensive Hussain fled to North Waziristan and today is most likely hiding somewhere in that area or in the agencies of Bajaur, Khyber or Mohmand.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq, under the label of the umbrella organization “Islamic State of Iraq” recently released the 8th part of its propaganda video series “Knights Of Martyrdom” featuring suicide bombings in Iraq.

This time, al-Qaeda seems to have dedicated the propaganda piece in support of the Nigerian Islamist movement Boko Haram which was victim of a government´s crackdown in 2009. Hundreds of Islamist activists, including Boko Haram leader, were killed by government troops after violent clashes broke out between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria´s North. Boko Haram, a organization described by some as the “Taliban of Nigeria”, were not entirely defeated by the Nigerian government and a resurge in their militant activities can be observed in recent weeks as an increasing number of Nigerian policemen were shot dead by Boko Haram militants.

Al Jazeera footage of Nigerian troops executing alleged Boko Haram members is included in the new al-Qaeda in Iraq video as well as a mention of the Swiss ban on minarets imposed in November 2009.

Three suicide bombers are featured in the newest “Knight Of Martyrdom” tape, two of them are Saudis Arabs (Abu Habeeb and Abu Nassir), one militant (Abu al-Baraa) is an Iraqi.
