Bünyamin E. – „Shy Boy“ from Germany killed in Drone Attack

by Florian Flade

In a small local newspaper in Western Germany, friends and employers advertised a obituary notice last week – mourning the death of a 20 year-old German of Turkish origin.

„In search of a life in faith, Benjamin (Bünyamin) was bombed to death by a drone in Pakistan early October“ – reads the texts of the eulogy.

Bünyamin E. grew up in the town of Vohlwinkel, near Wuppertal. He was never a very conspicuous teenager, always in the shadow of his older brother Emran (23). Bünyamin went to the secondary modern school, Germany´s lowest level of the educational system, graduated there in 2006. In 2007 the young German-Turk signed up for evening school in the city of Hohenstein, which he attended up to 2009.

Since the age of 14, Bünyamin E. worked in his holidays on a farm in Velbert-Langenberg, helping to butcher sheep. The local farm owners, a German and a German-Turk, describe him as a „reliable“ and „shy“ boy, very „likeable“. The 23year-old brother Emran E. also worked on the farm, but he was fired after a short time when he acted aggressively and rude against fellow workers.

The last time his employers saw Bünyamin was in December 2008. Only a few weeks ago, family told the farm owners, Bünyamin and his brother Emran traveled to Pakistan to receive religious education, learning the Quran and Hadith.

Ergin C., one of the former employers of Bünyamin E., says, the boy was probably sent to Pakistan by his strict father. „He would never have traveled there on his own intention“ – Ergin C. says.

About one week ago, Emran E. called his family in Vohlwinkel, telling them Bünyamin had been killed in a US drone attack near Mir Ali (North Waziristan) on October 4th. It is unclear wether or not Bünyamin´s brother was told by militants or has joined terror groups like the „Islamic Movement Uzbekistan“ (IMU) or „Islamic Jihad Union“ (IJU) himself.

German officials are investigating if the reports out of Pakistan are correct and wether or not Bünyamin E. was killed alongside Shahab D. and Naamen M. from Hamburg. Both were reported killed in a drone strike in Mir Ali early October.
