British Aid Worker killed in Afghanistan

Linda Norgrove

„It is with deep sadness that I must confirm that Linda Norgrove, the British aid worker who had been held hostage in eastern Afghanistan since 26 September, was killed at the hands of her captors in the course of a rescue attempt last night“ – British Foreign secretary William Hague said today.

He confirmed reports of a failed rescue attempt by US Special Forces on Friday night to free Mrs.Norgrove, who worked for humanitarian organization DAI and was kidnapped along with three colleagues in Kunar province of East Afghanistan last month.

Linda Norgrove had worked in Afghanistan for several years and was an expert in development work, according to DAI.

No information was given by the British Foreign Ministry on who the kidnappers were and if any demands were presented or even negotiations had begun.

„Responsibility for this tragic outcome rests squarely with the hostage takers“, Mr.Hague told reporters in London, „From the moment they took her, her life was under grave threat. Given who held her, and the danger she was in, we judged that Linda’s best chance lay in attempting to rescue her.“

Britain´s government had asked the media for a blackout on news coverage of the kidnapped person as it was very likely the kidnappers would regard their hostage more valuable if there was widespread media reporting.
