American Carries Out Suicide Bombing in Somalia

by Florian Flade

Two suicide bombers attacked an African Union (AU) base in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Saturday, October 29. According to the AU the assault which also involved several armed fighters failed. Both suicide bombers have detonated their explosives too early, the AU claims.

Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab on the other hand claims to have killed more than 80 Ugandan soldiers.

„In a fierce battle that lasted over two hours, the Mujahideen have yet again dealt another fatal blow to the African Crusaders“, a statement by Al-Shabaab reads, „Two martyrdom seekers infiltrated the AMISOM compound – the former metal factory – situated along the Industrial Road, near Mogadishu Stadium, and where divisions of the Ugandan soldiers and TFG militia were based, successfully killing the commander as he addressed the Ugandan forces along with several other soldiers.“

Two audio tapes of the alleged suicide bombers – Aden al-Ansari and Cabdi Salaam al-Muhajir – have also been released. Al-Muhajir („the immigrant“) speaks in fluent English and is described by Al-Shabaab as an American citizen.

„My brothers and sisters, do jihad in America, do jihad in Canada, do jihad in England, anywhere in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, in China, in Australia – anywhere you find kuffar. Fight them and be firm against them!“, the suicide bomber says on his farewell tape.

He urges Muslims living in the West to join the Jihad abroad instead of „sit around and be a couch potato and just chill all day“.

Meanwhile in Minneapolis (Minnesota) Muslim community leaders say they have identified the suicide bomber as 22-year old Abdisalan Hussein Ali, one of 20 Somali men who left the city in November 2008 and traveled to Somalia. Abdisalan Hussein Ali´s voice on the audio tape was recognized by his friends.

If confirmed to be from the U.S., Cabdi Salaam al-Muhajir, would be the third American suicide bomber who carried out an attack in Somalia as a member of Al-Shabaab. Shirwa Ahmed from Minneapolis became the first American suicide bomber when he and four other bombers blew themselves up in October 2008 killing 28 people in the Somaliland and Puntland region.

Mohamad Beledi known as „Abdullah Ahmed“ is said to have carried out a suicide bombing against a AU base in Mogadishu in May. Two AU and one Somali soldier died as a result of the attack.

For years know U.S. counter-terrorism officials monitored the travel movements of young Somali-American men, especially from the Twin City Region (Minneapolis) who have joined the Jihad in Somalia. Dozens of men, many of them U.S. citizens and the children of refugees who have fled the Somali civil war in the 1990s, left the U.S. to participate in the fight against Ethiopian occupation forces or African Union troops in Somalia.

A number of these American Jihadis – including a White convert to Islam – died in Somalia, most of them were shot during gun battles. One of those Americans who joined Al-Shabaab is Omar Hammami aka „Abu Mansour al-Amrikki“, a Syrian-American born and raised in Alabama. He is believed to be a high ranking commander in the „Muhajirun“ unit of Al-Shabaab, consisting of foreign Jihadis.

New Bin Laden Audio to France: „You Will Pay a High Price“

by Florian Flade

A new audio tape by Al-Qaida leader Osama Bin Laden has been broadcasted by Al-Jazeera today. The message „From Osama Bin Laden to the French People“ is directed to France and its President Sarkozy. Bin Laden calls for French troops to be withdrawn from Afghanistan. Otherwise he says, al-Qaida will kill French hostages they are holding. The fate of French hostages in Northwest Africa is linked to French policies, Bin Laden states.

„President Nicolas Sarkozy’s refusal to remove his forces from Afghanistan is nothing but a green light to kill the French hostages,“ Bin Laden says in the newest tape. „But we will not do that at the time that he determines to try and finish off with the repercussions of his position, which will cost him dearly inside and outside of France.“

Bin Laden goes on by saying: „We repeat the same message to you: The release of your prisoners in the hands of our brothers is linked to the withdrawal of your soldiers from our countries.“ France with „its doubt and budget deficit does not need a new front“, the al-Qaida leader warns.

Friday´s audio message is the second one in which Osama Bin Laden talks about French hostages held by al-Qaida. Although this time he does not explicitly mention the Niger hostages held by Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, there is no doubt Bin Laden highlights the five French nationals kidnapped in West-Africa.

French hostages held by al-Qaida in Niger

In September 2010 seven workers of a French company including five French nationals where kidnapped in Niger. Al-Qaida´s North-African branch AQIM claimed responsibility and released pictures and audio tapes of the hostages. The group demanded the release of Muslim prisoners in France as well as a rescission of the Burqa-ban imposed in France in 2010. AQIM said the fate of the hostages is determined by the decision of the al-Qaida leadership. France should negotiate the release of its citizens with Bin Laden, AQIM said.

Recently two Frenchmen were kidnapped by AQIM from a restaurant in Niger. Both men were killed in a rescue attempt by French Special Forces.

Two French journalists are being held hostage by the Taliban since December 2009 when they were abducted in eastern Afghanistan. In video messages released by the Taliban, the journalists called upon President Sarkozy to meet the demands of the kidnappers.

Bin Laden´s new tape is a clear indiciation the al-Qaida leader wants to proof the small leadership of al-Qaida Central in the Afghanistan-Pakistan tribal area is still in control of the whole organization. He responds to the North-African al-Qaida´s messages and therefore integrates the AQIM-branch into the network. The picture Bin Laden would like to present with this and previous tapes is:

1. The overseas branches of al-Qaida act according to the organization´s overall agenda of global jihad against the US, Israel and their interests and partners as well as against the traitor regimes of the Muslim world – but al-Qaida Central is still in control of the detail decisions.

2. The fate of French hostages in far-away Niger is decided by Bin Laden himself in the mountains of Waziristan. He as the leader and founder of Al-Qaida is still in charge of the network.

3. „It is all up to you“ – he points towards France´s President and explains his refusal of withdrawing troops from Muslim lands will result in the execution of French hostages. This way Bin Laden plays the ball to the French government which followed a very clear line in the past of not negotiating with al-Qaida. Rather France is still trying to use its military might (special forces in North-West-Africa) to rescue kidnapped French citizens. With his statement Bin Laden tells the French leader: you will have the blood of your citizens on your hand.

„Who will defend Scientist Aafia Siddiqui?“ – New Zawahiri Tape

by Florian Flade

Al-Qaeda´s media production wing presets a new audio message of Osama Bin Laden´s deputy, Ayman az-Zawahiri, titled „Who is defending Aafia Siddiqui?“

Siddiqui, a Pakistani scientist, was sentenced to 86 years in prison by an American court for trying to kill a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan. The 38 year old Pakistani was suspected of being an al-Qaeda member and interrogated by U.S. forces in 2008. During interrogation Siddiqui grabbed a gun and tried to kill one of the Americans in the room.

Labeled „Lady al-Qaeda“, the case of the Pakistani scientist is the cause for angry protest in Pakistan, where many see her as a victim of America´s wars and demand her release.

In the new four-minute audio tape, which was released in Arabic, Urdu, Pashtu and Farsi, covering the main languages of the Afghanistan-Pakistan area, Zawahiri addresses the U.S. and the Muslims, saying as America judges, it will be judged. To the Muslim Ummah, Zawahiri asks who is willing to defend Aafia Siddiqui and fight for her release.
