Al-Qaida Holding Five European Hostages In Mali

by Florian Flade

Nearly three weeks after five Europeans were abducted in Mali the terrorist network „Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb“ (AQIM) has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. In a new statement released in Jihadi Internet forums AQIM claims two French nationals were kidnapped in the Northeast of Mali on November 24. Both men disappeared from their hotel in the town of Hombori.

The following day, November 25, European tourists were sitting in a restaurant in the city of Timbuktu when armed gunmen attacked and abducted one Swede, a Dutchman and a South African holding a British passport. A 58 year-old German man named Martin A. who was part of the tourist group resisted the kidnappers and was then killed by the Al-Qaida gunmen.

AQIM now presents two images of the two hostage groups in addition to a written statement demanding France to end all military campaigns against Muslims. Further more AQIM urges the release of imprisoned Islamists.

Germany´s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has meanwhile confirmed the death of a German citizen in Mali. The Ministry also released a travel warning fro Mali, especially in the region around the ancient city of Timbuktu.

Taliban Claim Arrest of “Canadian Spy”

by Florian Flade

The Afghan Taliban claim to have captured a Canadian national in Southern Afghanistan, accusing him of being a “spy”. The 29 year-old man allegedly named Colin Rutherford is said to be resident of Toronto and was kidnapped by the Taliban insurgents in Ghazni Province, the Islamists claim.

According to the Taliban they have obtained documents and photographs which proof the Canadian was on a spying mission. A Taliban Spokesman said, those holding the Canadian have been contacted by Canadian officials, talks about the release of the accused spy were not successful yet. A video of the kidnapped man will be released soon, the Taliban states.

Even if there is no proof of the kidnapping claim, there are credible reports of a Canadian citizen who went missing in Ghazni several weeks ago. One of the sources of this information is allegedly the governor of Ghazni himself.

Meanwhile the Canadian government confirmed a Canadian citizen went missing in Afghanistan. Mr.Rutherford was travelling the country as a tourist. A recent graduate of University of Toronto, the 29-year old Canadian has traveled to the region a few times. In 2009 he traveled to Pakistan, stayed in Islamabad for three weeks and then traveled to the Kashmir region. Rutherford allegedly also traveled to Kabul, Afghanistan, October – November 2010.

2nd Video – Dokku Umarov Claims Moscow Airport Bombing

by Florian Flade

Did Dokku Umarov, the self-declared Emir of the Caucasus and most-wanted terrorist in Russia, think his latest message did not gain enough media attention or could be misunderstood? Only one day after a first propaganda video featuring Umarov was released on the Internet, a second tape appeared today – this time Umarov claimed directly responsibility for the suicide bombing at Moscow´s Domodedovo Airport on January 24.

On Saturday Umarov´s group, the “Islamic Emirate of the Caucasus”, had released a video featuring the Jihadi leader, a commander of the suicide-bomber unit (Riyad us-Salihin Brigade) of the group and a young man named “Saifullah” who was sent to Moscow to carry out a “special operation”. Although the Saturday-video bared all the hallmarks of a “claim of responsibility”-tape, there was no clear mention of an upcoming suicide bombing in Moscow. The alleged bomber however was tasked to go to Russia to commit a attack. Russia should expect, Umarov said, “a year of blood and tears.”

Possibly Dokku Umarov alias “Abu Usman” was not very satisfied with the media coverage of the first video tape featuring him and the Moscow suicide bomber. The rebel leader appeared today in a second tape in which he declares he had ordered the Moscow Airport bombing “and that such operations will undoubtedly continue in the future”. The Muslims of the Caucasus are at war with Russia, Umarov says, fighting for liberation and their dignity. Russia will be faced with new terror attacks in the future, Umarov warns in today´s tape. “40-60 brothers are ready to carry out such operations”, the Chechen Jihadi leader says, “These attacks will continue every week and every month.”

Russian police investigators said they have identified the suicide bomber which carried out the bloody bombing in January which left 36 people dead. The bomber suspect is most likely a 20 year-old man from North Caucasian Republic of Ingushetia who disappeared from his village some six months ago. From a look at the picture taken by police after the bombing, the face of the suicide bomber matches the one of “Saifullah” seen in the Saturday video claim by the Caucasian Jihadis.
