The „Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan“ (IMU) presents a chilling list celebrating 87 „martyrs“ of the organization killed in 2011 – amongst them Afghans, Pakistanis, Tajiks, Uzbeks and a German.

Most of the IMU fighters – 64 militants – were killed during fighting and suicide attacks in Afghanistan, mostly in the northern region of the country.

Some of the most famous Jihadi militants serving in the ranks of the IMU were killed this year: Commander Abbas Mansour from Kyrgyzstan, the military commander of IMU, Uzbek „Ukosha“ from Tashkent who served as a propaganda chief of IMU, and a German Islamist from the city of Essen named Abdullah H. aka „Miqdaad“.

The new martyr list reveals the pressure under which IMU is operating. Many of their fighters are prime targets of NATO assassination campaigns and are also under the heavy missile barrage of the CIA drones in the Afghan-Pakistan border region.

The „Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan“ (IMU), a militant group based in the Pakistani tribal areas, has released a photo gallery presenting fighters killed in 2010 combat and airstrikes. For weeks the IMU´s propaganda activities were almost dead, their Germany-based website was close and no new video was produced, no confirmation on the rumours about German militants killed in U.S. drone attacks appeared on the internet.

In the IMU statement publishing the names, nationalities and also portraits of the „martyrs“ is says, the militant group had fighters killed on three fronts – Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan. This might indicate that IMU has expanded it´s insurgent campaign into the Central Asian Republic of Tajikistan by mid-2010. 52 IMU fighters were killed in 2010, Jihadi militants from Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russian Tatarstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Morocco, two are from Tunisia and two are from Turkey. According to the IMU „unfortunately more than half of the martyrs have become victims of airstrikes“.

From the details provided by IMU, a large number of Jihadis hailed from the North of Afghanistan. Eleven martyrs are from the Kunduz Province of Afghanistan, others are from Takhar, Baghlan, Lugar, Balkh, Kabul, Badakshan.

Many of those who are reported as killed now have been featured in IMU propaganda videos. Question remains while German Jihadis Shahab D. of Hamburg and Bünyamin E. of Wuppertal are not mentioned as 2010-martyrs. Both were killed in a single US drone strike early October in North-Waziristan. As far as intelligence reports suggest, the two German Islamists were members of IMU.

Pakistani ISI Soldier on Suicide Operation in India?

by Florian Flade

Most nations treat their soldiers fallen in wars as noble citizens, heroes in some way, men and women wearing the uniform to protect their country, people and interests. That however does not mean the fallen are praised as „martyrs“, at least not in the Western hemisphere and in every case of a soldier killed in war. In Pakistan this is different. The Islamic Repulic of Pakistan regards its fallen military servicemen as martyrs who died fighting for nation and faith.

On the website of the Pakistani Military there is a special section devoted to the heroes that were killed fighting in the India-Pakistan Wars, the internal fight against the Taliban or military intervention in Swat or Waziristan. „Shuhada´s (Martyrs) Corner“ is that martyr-gallery called and it hails the rough details of hundreds of fallen soldiers sometimes even including their portrait.

A few days ago the list of killed Pakistani soldiers was updated. One of the newly added soldier profiles was No.1726016, a soldier of the engineer rank serving in the ranks of Pakistan´s intelligence agency ISI. Nk Zulfiqar Ahmed died November 16th 2007. Nothing unusual so far, if there weren´t the location of his death and his alleged operation given. Zulfiqar Ahmed died at Ganga Ram Hospital in the Indian capital New Delhi and despite his cause of death apparently was a kidney failure, his actual operation task was a rather unusual one: „Suicide Attack“.

Today India´s Army chief General Singh was asked by reporters about the Pakistani ISI „martyr“ that had obviously tried to carry out a suicidal operation. „I have nothing to say on what they have put up on their website“, Singh said about the Pakistani military, „But if they have, then it clearly show what their intentions and ways are and what their next move will be.“

Meanwhile the profile of the ISI suicide attacker has been removed from the Shuhada Corner of http://www.pakistanarmy.gov.pk. No explanation has yet come up from the Pakistani Defence Ministry on what Zulfiqar Ahmed was tasked to do in India and why he died in an Indian hospital. Checking the date reveals that there has been no suicide bombing in India on November 16th so it seems the ISI agent was either captured or just hospitalized as a regular patient at the New Delhi hospital.
