The Day Al-Qaida Fired Bekkay Harrach

by Florian Flade

Bekkay Harrach aka “Abu Talha al Almani” – Terrorist threats in the name of Al-Qaida

He looked a bit undressed in his suite and tie in front of a red curtain, but his message was a chilling one: Germany is about to experience bloody terror by Al-Qaida if the people choose to vote for a new government which is still committed to the Afghanistan engagement of the German military – the September 2009 video message by German Al-Qaida terrorist Bekkay Harrach.

The video posted on the internet on September 18 was Harrach´s second terror threat. In January 2009 he appeared for the first time in a video produced by Al-Qaida´s As-Sahab Media titled “Das Rettungspaket für Al-Qaida”. Harrach aka “Abu Talha the German” threatened terror attacks in Germany after the September 2009 elections – the first direct warning to Germany coming from Al-Qaida.

Harrach´s second message, released only a few days before the parliamentary elections, caused German counter-terrorism officials to rise the threat level drastically.  Again the German-Moroccan from Bonn reminded the German public of Al-Qaida´s promise. For those inside the intelligence community there was no doubt: Al-Qaida had set sights on Germany.

What seemed to be a coordinated Al-Qaida campaign against Germany was in fact a lonesome plan by Harrach to strike fear in his old home country. German magazine SPIEGEL reports that Bekkay Harrach who acted as Al-Qaida´s official German spokesman, was dismissed by the terrorist network because of the September 2009 video message. The video was not authorized by Al-Qaida nor was it recorded and produced by it´s official propaganda wing “As-Sahab Media”.

The video did not bear any official label – it had allegedly been produced and released by Al-Fajr Media, Jihadi propaganda outlet who releases video, audio and written statements on behalf of several Jihadi groups.

During interrogation two German Jihadis, Rami Makanesi and Ahmad W. Siddiqi, told German intelligence that Al-Qaida was so angry about Harrach´s independent action in the name of the organization that he was fired by Al-Qaida´s leadership in Waziristan. Harrach had to leave the organization in late 2009, Makanesi and Siddiqi told the interrogators.

Shortly after the September 2009 threat video was posted on the internet some experts doubted the authenticity of it. Why did Harrach appear in a Al-Qaida video dressed in the same outfit US-President Barack Obama wore during his Cairo speech? Never before had an Al-Qaida official appeared in video dressed up like a Western politician. And why was there no official editing done to the video by “As-Sahab Media”?

It seems reasonable to say Harrach most likely was hoping for Islamist sympathizers in Germany to act on their own after the Al-Qaida threat. Eventhough he urged followers to hold any terrorist attacks and to wait till Al-Qaida members would begin the bloody campaign against Germany, he propbably knew that no such terrorist cells existed in the country. He was hoping for the “lone wolves” to be inspired by his message.

None of them acted, no terrorist attack was carried out during or in the weeks after the 2009 election in Germany. Bekkay Harrach´s promise in the name of Al-Qaida was not fullfilled. He himself will not be able to fullfill it himself either – Harrach, who had traveled to Pakistan in 2007 and joined Al-Qaida, was killed in late summer 2010 during an assault attack on US military base Bagram in southern Afghanistan.

German Jihadi Mounir C. Alive

by Florian Flade

Last week news of a drone attack in Pakistan that had killed or wounded German Jihadi Mounir C. aka “Abu Adam” spread on Jihadist websites with connection to Waziristan-based militant groups.  As new propaganda material was released on the Internet recently, including a audio message by Mounir C., the news has to be corrected.

The “Islamic Movement Uzbekistan” (IMU) released a short audio recording by Mounir C. as a message on the occasion of Eid ul-Fitr, the end of the Holy month of Ramadan.

“The mujahideen were blessed by Allah to be not only amongst those fasting but also amongst those fighting”, Mounir C. says in the message, “Most conquests and victories of the Muslims were achieved during the month of Ramadan.”

“For many Muslims the day of Eid is not a blessing as they suffer in captivity of the taghout and kuffar”, the Jihadi militant from Bonn continues to say, “the light does not reach their cells during the day of Eid.”

Both, sources from Waziristan and German intelligence, do not have any credible information confirming the death of Mounir C. in a recent US drone attack in the tribal areas. “We do not have any information on that”, a source in German intelligence tells me.

What seems interesting though is the fact that IMU released Mounir C.´s speech as a audio message not as a video – he usually has no reason not to appear on camera. So was Mounir C., one of the most important Mujahid in the ranks of IMU´s propaganda wing, injured in fighting or a drone strike and is still suffering from his wounds?

Al-Qaida Releases Final Osama Bin Laden Audio Message

by Florian Flade

Al-Qaida´s As-Sahab Media has released the final audio message by Osama Bin Laden. The 12-minute audio is titled “Message by Sheikh Osama Bin Laden to the Muslim Ummah” and praises the political events of North Africa, the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.

Here are some quotes from Bin Laden´s message

“Days of Glory for Islam have come and the leaders disappeared from Arab lands. They lived upon thrones until we received the news with joy.
The Muslim Ummah was always awaiting the victory to be rising from the eastern horizon but surprisingly the sun of the revolution rose from the Maghrib (West). The light of the revolution sparked in Tunisia, and the nation felt the relief, the faces of the people brightened, and the throats of the rulers got coarser and the Jews got terrified because the coming of the promised day”

“The new meanings of freedom, pride, audacity, and courage have risen. The winds of change have come, in a will of liberation. And Tunisia took the first credit fast as like the strike of lightning. The knights took the torch from the free men of Tunisia to Tahrir Square. So a great revolution started, and what a great revolution! A revolution that will change the whole of Egypt and the whole Ummah if it holds onto the rope of Allah.”

“So they brought torches in the Tahrir Square in Cairo to crush the corrupted system. They stood in front of the face of fraud and they raised their fists against it. And they did not fear its army. They made a commitment and fullfilled their promise.”

“You are the knights and leaders and in your hand you have its bridles. The Ummah had saved you to this very gravely missed events. So continue the march and do not fear the hardship”

“Oh children of this Muslim Ummah, there is a serious crossroads before you and a great and rare historic opportunity to rise with the Ummah and to free yourselves from servitude to the desires of the rulers, man-made law, and Western dominance.”

“And also the best of Martys is Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib and the one that speaks the truth in the face of the oppressive tyrant, and he is killed because of this. Congratulations to whoever had this great intention, if he dies he is the best of Martyrs and if he lives on he lives with pride and glory. Stand by truth and don not worry. Saying the truth to a tyrant is the pride and good tidings. It is the path in this life and it is path to the hereafter. Whether you want to die as a slave or if you want to die as a freeman.”

Question remains why it took As-Sahab Media almost three weeks to release Osama Bin Laden´s latest audio tape. Why didn´t the Al-Qa´ida leader mention the ongoing conflict in Libya, the anti-regime protests in Yemen and Syria?

The release date might be explained with yesterday´s Obama Middle-East speech. The US-President praised the political changes in the region – and so does the late Al-Qa´ida leader. As-Sahab picked the date of the Bin Laden message release on the Internet with full knowledge of Obama´s plans to talk to the Arab world.
