Swedish Suicide Bomber Trained in Iraq

Al-Arabiya TV Channel reports it has received information that the failed Stockholm suicide bomber Taimour Abdulwahhab al-Abdali underwent terror training in Iraq before he carried out his attack in the Swedish capital in early December 2010. Tonight the Arabic speaking TV channel will broadcast the new information in a show called „Industrie of Death“.

Major General Zia Kinani, Head of Iraqi Counter-Terrorism, told Al-Arabiya Iraqi security officials had warned Swedish authorities two months prior to the bombing in Stockholm, that Sweden might be a possible target for the Iraqi al-Qaida network. The USA and Sweden have been warned the „Islamic State of Iraq“ (Al-Qaida) is planning to carry out operations in the USA and Europe.

The Swedish national Taimour Abdulwahhab al-Abdali who blew himself up next to a busy shopping street in Stockholm, had entered Iraq via the Turkish border in 2010, Iraqi officials have learned. He received explosives training in an al-Qaida training camp in the Northern Iraqi city of Mosul. Several other foreign Jihadis, including an Egyptian, were trained at the same time and same place as al-Abdali. One of the Egyptians who trained alongside al-Abdali is still at large. Security forces suspect the man was tasked with a similar operation.

Iraqi security officials believe al-Qaida in Iraq („Islamic State of Iraq“) is trying to carry out a big operation in Europe or the USA to proof that the group is still alive and dangerous. They try to do the same thing the Yemeni al-Qaida (Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula) did – take the local fight to external operations, sending Western individuals on terror missions. Al-Qaida in Iraq is therefore trying to recruit Western Jihadis, European and North American citizens.

Shortly after the death of its famous leader and Amir Abu Mussab az-Zarqawi, the Iraqi al-Qaida branch carried out its first international operation on November 9th 2005 in the Jordanian capital Amman. A suicide bomber couple was sent to Jordan from Iraq to kill Westerners and Jordanian intelligence officials in a hotel. 60 people died, most of them guests of a wedding which took place at the targeted hotel.

Since the Jordan attack, no operation was successfully carried out outside Iraq by members of the Iraqi al-Qaida. The Stockholm suicide bomber al-Abdali sent three audio messages to Swedish police and a news agency, in which he stated „the Islamic State has begun to fulfill its promise“. Al-Abdali did not specifically mention Iraq or the „Islamic State of Iraq“. Terror experts and Swedish officials therefore did not immediately confirm a link between the Stockholm bomber and the terror network. However, al-Abdali did mention he traveled to the Middle East several times over the past four years, saying he feels sorry for lying to his wife and children about the motives of his journeys. „I did not go for business, I went for Jihad“, al-Abdali says in the audio message.

The Swedish citizen of Iraqi origin also indicates the existence of more trained terrorists ready to strike Europe. „We are not a lie…we are for real and now exist among you Europeans“, al-Abdali says.

Der Terror hat tausend Gesichter – Und kein Profil

Bei Sicherheitskontrollen an deutschen Flughäfen soll ein terroristisches Täterprofil zum Einsatz kommen – so der Vorschlag vom Präsidenten des Deutschen Flughafenverbandes. Wer glaubt dies bringe den gewünschten Erfolg lebt im sicherheitspolitischen Mittelalter.

„Diese neue Generation von Mujahideen wächst mehrsprachig auf. Sie lernen hier in der Regel Arabisch, Türkisch, Englisch, Paschtu, Urdu und die Muttersprache der Eltern“, schrieb der Saarländer Konvertit Eric Breininger in seinen Memoiren, die im April im Internet veröffentlicht wurden, kurz nachdem pakistanische Soldaten den deutschen Islamisten erschossen hatten. „Mit Allahs Erlaubnis wird dieser Nachwuchs zu einer ganz besonderen Generation von Terroristen, die in keiner Datenbank und keiner Liste der Feinde Allahs erfasst ist“, schrieb Breininger weiter, „Sie sprechen die Sprachen der Feinde, kennen ihre Sitten und Bräuche und können sich auf Grund ihres europäischen Aussehens hervorragend tarnen und so die Länder der Ungläubigen unauffällig infiltrieren um dort eine Operation nach der anderen ausführen und so Angst und Terror in ihren Herzen zu sähen.“

Der inzwischen getötete Breininger macht auf mit seiner Autobiografie postmortem ein Phänomen aufmerksam, das Sicherheitsdiensten zunehmend zu schaffen macht. Historische Profile von islamistischen Attentätern beginnen zu bröckeln, phenotypische Terroristenprofile lassen sich neun Jahre nach dem 11.September 2001 nicht mehr aufrechterhalten. Der dschihadistische Terrorismus kommt längst nicht mehr im Gewand eines Mohammed Atta oder Ziad Jarrah daher.

Genau deshalb lässt sich das vom Präsident des Deutschen Flughafenverbandes Christoph Blume vorgeschlagene Profiling von Passagieren an deutschen Flughäfen nicht nur verfassungsrechtlich hinterfragen, sondern darf als wenig effektiv bewertet werden.
Von welchem Profil etwa spricht Herr Blume? Ist es der 20-30jährige Mann nahöstlich oder vorderasiatischer Herkunft? Trägt er Bart oder ist frisch rasiert? Reist er alleine oder mit Familie? Spricht er Arabisch, Türkisch oder Pashtu? In Kategorien zu denken mag hilfreich erscheinen. Es macht Vorurteile vermeintlich real bedeutsam und formt eine Realität, deren Komplexität schlechtweg verkannt oder bewusst ignoriert wird. Wer sich sein Terroristen-Profil bastelt vermittelt Passagieren den Eindruck, Reisen würde dadurch sicherer dass ab sofort Türken und Araber eine separate Sicherheitsschleuse benutzen müssen. Abgesehen von der Frage nach Menschenwürde und Bürgerrechten – ein fataler Trugschluss welcher der sicherheitspolitischen Realität nicht gerecht wird.

Vor fast genau einem Jahr überwältigten Passagiere den dunkelhäutigen Nigerianer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, der eine in der Unterwäsche versteckte Bombe in einem US-Passagierflugzeug über Detroit zünden wollte. Der Sohn eines nigerianischen Bankiers sprach perfektes Englisch, trug ein weißes T-Shirt, hatte keinen Bart. Welchem Täterprofil entsprach Abdulmutallab?

Beispiel Sauerlandzelle. Ihre Mitglieder waren ein blonder Konvertit namens Fritz, ein langhaariger, hellhäutiger Deutscher namens Daniel. Wäre Breininger nicht in etlichen Propagandavideos aufgetreten und hätten deutsche Behörden ihn nicht auf dem Radar gehabt – wem wäre der blonde, blauäugige Saarländer mit spärlichem Oberlippenbart als Terrorist aufgefallen? Was ist mit den dunkelhäutigen Somaliern die dutzendfach die europäischen Exil-Gemeinde von Großbritannien, Schweden und Dänemark verlassen und eventuell als ausbildete Guerilla-Kämpfer zurückkehren?

In den terroristischen Ausbildungslagern Pakistans tummeln sich seit Jahren nicht mehr nur Ibrahims, Mohammeds, Ahmeds oder Omars. Konvertiten dominieren zunehmend die Szene, weiße, europäische oder nordamerikanische Islamisten, die teilweise nur wenige Monaten nach dem Übertritt zum Islam den militanten Weg einschlagen und Märtyrer werden wollen. Ihre Profile sind so variabel wie die Personen selbst. Soll also das Sicherheitspersonal an deutschen Flughäfen nun in Zukunft auf rothaarige Briten, blauäugige Libanesen, hellhäutige Algerier, dunkelhäutige Somalier mit dänischem Akzent achten?

Ein gefährliches Merkmal der al-Qaida-Kultur ist nicht etwa ihre Gefahr oder der schier grenzenlose Fanatismus, sondern vielmehr die Tatsache dass es Bin Laden gelang aus den Wirren des anti-sowjetischen Krieges in Afghanistan eine islamistische Internationale zu formen. Während die militanten Palästinensergruppen kaum einen Monat ohne interne Machtkämpfe und blutige Streitereien verbleiben, hat al-Qaida eine multiethnische, multilinguale Dschihad-Allianz geschaffen, ein terroristisches Netzwerk das die Grenzen von Nationalität, Rasse, Hautfarbe und gar Geschlecht überwindet.

Auf Propagandaebene hat sich das Netzwerk schon lange auf nicht-arabische Rekruten konzentriert. Englischsprachige Videobotschaften und Schriften sollen Muslime im Westen mit dem dschihadistischen Virus infizieren. Sie sollen Einzeltäter dazu bringen ohne Befehl, ohne Netzwerk, ohne Komplizen loszuschlagen. Erreicht werden damit keineswegs nur westliche Islamisten mit arabisch oder pakistanischem Hintergrund. Die Liste jener Terroristen, die in den vergangenen Jahren festgenommen wurden, und in kein Kategorie-Schema passen ist lang und wird immer länger.

„Jihad Jane“ ist der Spitzname der amerikanischen Konvertitin Colleen LaRose, die im Zusammenhang mit einem geplanten Anschlag auf den schwedischen Mohammed-Karikaturisten Lars Vilks festgenommen wurde. Nicht einmal israelischen Profilern wäre die blauäugige Frau mit wallender, blonder Mähne aufgefallen. Auch der Amerikaner Bryant Neal Vinas wollte im Namen Allahs töten. Er ist ein Hispanic aus New Jersey, ausgebildet in einem al-Qaida Lager in Pakistan.

Die Einführung eines Profiling nach Aussehen, Geschlecht und ethnischer Herkunft ist demnach nichts anderes als ein Arbeiten gegen den Trend. Ein Blick in die islamistischen Propagandavideos der vergangenen Jahre belegt: der dschihadistische Feind hat viele Gesichter, spricht etliche Sprachen und besitzt westliche Pässe. Neben deutschen Islamisten trainieren Usbeken, Tadschiken, Kirgisen, Tataren, Dagestaner und andere zentralasiatische Ethnien in den Lagern Waziristan. Chinesische Uiguren, Indonesier, Bangladescher und Maledivier tauchen auf, komplett verschleierte Frauen und vermummte unbekannte Gesichter die in akzentfreiem Deutsch Hass predigen – sogar albinotische Personen.

Geheimdienstarbeit und grenzübergreifende Zusammenarbeit von Sicherheitsdiensten und nicht das Fixieren auf ein veraltetes Täterprofil sind der effektivste Weg für eine sichere, terrorfreie Zivilluftfahrt. Das Risiko ist die Dunkelziffer, an deren Minimierung die deutschen Sicherheitsbehörden fieberhaft, und teilweise durchaus erfolgreich, arbeiten. Durch Videopropaganda bekannte Gesichter, wie etwa das von Breininger, Bekkay Harrach oder Mounir Chouka, würden wohl nie wagen per Flugzeug in Richtung Bundesrepublik abzufliegen. Zu bekannt sind sie, als dass sie per Passagierflugzeug versuchen würden einzureisen.

Viel gefährlich sind jene, die im Schatten der Propaganda-Schlachtrösser standen, bislang unbekannte Islamisten, jene Generation der europäisch aussehenden Kosmopoliten dschihadistischer Couleur, die Eric Breininger in seinen Memoiren erwähnte.

Mysterious Murder in Lebanon

Jund al-Sham leader Ghandi al-Sahmarani

Palestinian refugee camps are the Lebanese equivalent of Pakistan´s Waziristan – lawless, autonomous areas ruled by various political and militant factions and their armed militias, breeding grounds for violent ideologies. Twelve of these camps exist since the 1960s, most of them harboring tens of thousands of Palestinians who fled Israeli military campaigns and settled in the Cedar Republic. Lebanon´s government does not regard the Palestinians as citizens, even though new generations have been born and raised in the camps on Lebanese soil. Lebanese security forces try everything they can to avoid going into the chaotic camps. Invading these areas has taken a high toll on the Lebanese army in the past.

The refugees themselves are still carrying the hope of one day returning to a Palestine State and therefore often copy the resistance and militant culture of the Palestinian territories. Fatah exists in these camps, recruiting young Palestinians in exile and indoctrinating them with a Palestinian nationalism and prior to his death also with the Arafat-cult. Although not that influential, Exile-Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad were also established in the Palestinian camps, spreading a religious-driven jihadi form of resistance and martyrdom culture.

Much more dangerous than the well-known Palestinian factions who are competing to recruit the refugees for their cause are the smaller, much more radical groups gaining foothold in the camps of Nahr al-Bared, Ain al-Hilweh and others. Among them are Lebanese-born Salafi Jihadi groups such as „Esbat al-Nur“ and „Fatah al-Islam“ with an overall agenda of establishing a global Islamic State implementing Sharia not only in Palestine or Lebanon but across the Middle East. Influenced by al-Qaida and with a leadership of Jihadi veterans from the Iraq War, these groups are a major concern for the security of Lebanon.

One of the leaders of such a group was found dead yesterday in Ain al-Hilweh Refugee Camp near the Port City of Saida. Ghandi al-Sahmarani known as „Abu Ramiz al-Tababulsi“, was the leader of Jund al-Sham, a small Jihadi militant group fighting to create a Taliban-style state in the region of Sham (Greater Syria) – today´s Israel, Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. The group´s leadership basically copied al-Qaida´s list of enemies – America, Israel, Jews, Christians – and added native enemies, the Lebanese government and security forces as well as nationalistic Palestinians and the Shiite Hizbollah which Jund al-Sham declared being „heretics“ and enemies of the Sunni people.

Jund al-Sham leader Al-Sahmarani was found murdered in a garage in Ain al-Hilweh, handcuffed and blindfolded with signs of torture all over his dead body. The dead body was taken to Hamshari Hospital in nearby Sidon where doctor´s examined the militant leader was killed by a single shot through his mouth in the head. Investigators believe al-Sahmarani was murdered in a different area and then brought to Ain al-Hilweh a few hours before he was found.

Ghandi al-Sahmarani was born in Tripoli and joined Sunni militant groups in the North of Lebanon. After violent clashes in 1999 near the city of Dinniyah left 11 Lebanese soldiers and several fighters of the so-called Dinniyeh-Group dead, he fled to the refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh (Population of 75,000) where the group established its headquarter. In 2004 Jund al-Sham was created under the leadership of former Abu Nidal-member Ahmed Abdul Rahman al-Sharqiyeh („Abu Youssef al-Sharqiyeh“) and immediately began a al-Qaida-inspired violent campaign to fight rival factions.

In July 2004 Jund al-Sham clashed with the Fatah militia in Ain al-Hilweh, leaving five people wounded. Back then Fatah military commander in southern Lebanon warned the Jihadi group: „We will chop off the hands of those who harm any Fatah member or civilian in the camp!“
Imad Yassin, the military head of Jund al-Sham, was a former member of Esbat al-Nur and merged his break-away faction into the new group, bringing in experience in sending Lebanese fighters to Iraq. By early 2005, Abu Youssef al-Sharqiyeh departed Jund al-Sham and the remaining group, consisting of only a few dozen members, was since then led by Ghandi al-Sahmarani (named „Al-Qaida leader of Lebanon“ by the media).

Since 2004 Jund al-Sham clashed numerous times with Palestinian militias loyal to Fatah. Shehade Jawhar, one commander of the group was killed fighting Fatah members in July 2008, other Jihadis died last week when groups were engaged in bloody battle.
Furthermore Jund al-Sham claimed responsibility for assassinations and targeted killings such as the murder of Hizbollah official Ghaleb Awwali in southern Beirut in 2004. Then leader of the group al-Sharqiyeh denied involvement and told news agencies: „“This statement is a fabrication. We have nothing to do with this operation… and the first party to benefit from it is the Mossad Israeli intelligence agency.“

As Jund al-Sham has never been a major player in the political stage of the Palestinian refugee camps, mystery remains why Ghandi al-Sahmarani was murdered now. Because of the group´s hostilities to the much more powerful and popular Fatah, the Jihadi leader was banned from entering Ain al-Hilweh since 2008. Taking the dead body to the camp can only mean he either entered the area without permission of local Fatah security forces and was captured and killed, or he was murdered outside of Ain al-Hilweh and the body positioned inside the camp as a warning to remaining Jund al-Sham sympathizers.

Highly unlikely is the possibility of a Hizbollah assassination. The Shiite movement was not seriously threatened by a small Jihadi faction like Jund al-Sham and therefore would not really care about the faith of the al-Qaida-inspired Palestinian militia.
