Daten gegen Dschihadisten

Bei der Operation „Gallant Phoenix“ sammeln Militärs, Geheimdienste und Polizeibehörden aus 27 Ländern Informationen über IS-Terroristen. Auch Deutschland ist dabei.

Eine kleine, internationale Gemeinschaft ist hier entstanden. Auf einer Militärbasis nahe der jordanischen Stadt Zarqa, nordöstlich der Hauptstadt Amman. Soldaten, Geheimdienstler und Polizisten aus der ganzen Welt sind hier stationiert, machen gemeinsam Sport, treffen sich zum Grillen. Auch Beamte aus Deutschland sind dabei, vom Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) und vom Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND). Sie sind Teil einer geheimen Militäroperation, die Terroranschläge verhindern und Terroristen ins Gefängnis bringen soll – der Operation „Gallant Phoenix“.

Es ist ein Projekt unter Federführung des US-Militärs, ins Leben gerufen schon im Jahr 2013, um die ausländischen Terrorkämpfer („Foreign Terrorist Fighters“) in den Blick zu nehmen, die nach Syrien und in den Irak zogen. Bereits ein Jahr später waren weitere Nationen an der Operation beteiligt, richtig los ging es jedoch erst im Jahr 2016, nach den verheerenden Terroranschlägen in Paris und Brüssel mit mehr als 130 Toten. Mittlerweile ist „Gallant Phoenix“ zu einer einzigartigen Austauschplattform für Behörden aus rund zwei Dutzend Ländern herangewachsen – und zur größte Datenbank mit Material der Terrormiliz „Islamischer Staat“ (IS). 

Jordanian Al-Qaida Fighter Killed in Afghanistan

„The hero of Khorasan Zaid Saleh al-Hourani, known to everyone as Abu Musab al-Hourani“, the beginning of a short biography of a Jordanian Jihadist fighter killed in Afghanistan reads. The article about Al-Hourani was posted on Jihadist Internet forums recently and gives a rare insight into the situation of foreign fighters in Afghanistan these days.

„Abu Musab al-Hourani“, a resident of Amman, from a Jericho family, allegedly was a close aid to former Iraqi Al-Qaida leader Abu Musab az-Zarqawi and recruited about 30 other Jordanians to Jihad in Iraq. In Jordan al-Hourani was imprisoned for 5 years because of his terrorist activities.

In 2010 he traveled to Pakistan and joined the mujaheddin in the tribal areas. Pictures released with his biography are showing Abu Musab al-Hourani in the Pakistani tribal agency of Orakzai. „He took part in operations targeting the Pakistani military“, the biography reads. Al-Hourani was wounded during the fighting in Pakistan, both in battle with Pakistani troops (on his leg) and in CIA drone strikes (again his leg) but recovered from the injuries.

After two years as part of the Al-Qaida forces in Pakistan Abu Musab al-Hourani decided to wage Jihad in Afghanistan. In July 2012 he was killed during a US military raid in the province of Ghazni.

Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb Demands Release of Abu Qatada

Last November Islamist militants of Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) kidnapped three Europeans in the Mali desert city of Timbuktu. Among them British-South African national Stephen Malcolm.

Today AQIM released a statement offering the release of the Briton in return for the release of Palestinian cleric Abu Qatada. If the British government agrees to deport Abu Qatada to a country of his choice, Stephen Malcolm will be freed, the statement by AQIM reads.

Britain has been trying to extradite Abu Qatada to Jordan for more than six years now. In the Arab country the cleric has been sentenced in absentia for the involvement in terror attacks. Now the European Court of Human Rights is about to decide wether or not the British government is allowed to extradite Abu Qatada.

In today´s statement AQIM says that Britain will „open the doors of evil“ if the Palestinian cleric will be send to Jordan.
